JNR Gorilla X replacement pod: what it is for

On an ordinary rechargeable puff the coil is built into the body of the device. It wears out after a few weeks and, being inseparable from the rest, the battery goes with it. You therefore throw away a cell that would have lasted months more.

The Gorilla X range works differently: the coil is housed in the cartridge. That is the only part genuinely wearing out, so it is the only one you replace. The 1000 mAh battery, the screen and the charging port stay in service. It is also what gives meaning to the 43,000 puffs announced across the range: that potential is calculated over the full life of the device, pod replacements included.

This pod is that spare part. It holds a new Dual Mesh coil and a 15 ml tank to fill. You clip it onto your existing device and it runs like it did on day one.

There is no Strawberry pod and no Mint pod. The pod is generic and compatible with the whole range, whatever flavour of device you bought. No compatibility check, no chance of ordering the wrong item.

That is also what lets you keep a spare pod in a drawer without a second thought. The day the taste turns, the part is already there and you are not waiting on a delivery to carry on vaping.

When to change the pod

The first sign is in the taste: the flavour flattens, then a burnt or hot cotton note appears on the exhale. The liquid is not at fault, the cotton has simply reached the end of its life.

The second sign is the vapour: it turns thinner, drier, less pleasant on the throat. Some vapers also notice liquid creeping towards the mouthpiece more often, a sign the cotton no longer holds properly.

Lifespan depends mostly on the liquid used. Very sweet profiles caramelise on the coil and clog it faster; mentholated or lightly sweetened profiles generally last longer. How often you vape obviously counts just as much.

How to do it

Pull the old pod off by hand, it releases without tools. Fit the new one, check it is properly seated, then fill it from the top with the e-liquid of your choice.

Important point on a new coil: let the cotton soak for five to ten minutes before the first draw. It feels long, it is the step everyone skips, and it is exactly what prevents burning a coil that would have lasted weeks.

What it saves

A complete device costs 23.90 euros, a replacement pod 7.90 euros. On a single renewal the gap is already clear. Across several months of daily vaping it becomes hard to ignore.

You do of course have to add the cost of e-liquid, since the pod is sold empty. But the comparison holds: you are no longer paying for a battery, a screen and a charging circuit every time some cotton reaches the end of its life.

Changing flavour without changing device

Since the pod is generic, nothing obliges you to stay on the original flavour. One pod per aroma family and you swap as the mood takes you, without mixing tastes in the same cotton.

It is the cleanest way to alternate between, say, the Fresh Mint during the day and something richer like the Iced Strawberry Watermelon in the evening. The same reasoning applies to alternating a fruity profile such as the Forest Fruits with a tangy one such as the Citrus Passion Fruit. Rinsing a pod between two liquids does not work: water stays trapped in the cotton and ruins the first draws.

The Dual Mesh coil

Every pod carries a new Dual Mesh coil, with two heating meshes instead of one. Wider heating surface, more even temperature rise, denser vapour. That is why a fresh pod renders aromas markedly better than one nearing the end of its run.

What the pod does not include

The pod ships empty and without e-liquid. Unlike the cartridge supplied with a new device, it is not primed: filling it and respecting the soaking time before the first draw is on you.

How many pods should you keep?

For daily use, keeping one spare covers most situations. Vapers who alternate between several flavours often take two or three, one per aroma family, which avoids mixing and failed transitions.

Can a pod be cleaned rather than replaced?

No, at least not usefully. Cotton and mesh do not clean: once the cotton is burnt or saturated with sugar residue, no rinse brings it back. At 7.90 euros, the replacement question answers itself fairly quickly.

Does the pod fit another device from the brand?

It is designed for the Gorilla X range only. Other JNR references, in particular the non rechargeable puffs, use different architectures and are not compatible.

Can any e-liquid go in it?

The cartridge takes standard nicotine salt e-liquids, the usual format for this kind of device. Very thick or very sweet liquids remain inadvisable, not through incompatibility, but because they shorten coil life.
