What are cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are a class of chemical compounds naturally present in the cannabis plant. They interact with the human body's endocannabinoid system, a cell-signalling system that plays a crucial role in regulating various physiological functions such as mood, appetite, pain and memory. Cannabinoids can be classified into three main categories.

Phytocannabinoids are cannabinoids naturally produced by the cannabis plant. The most well-known and studied are THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the main psychoactive compound responsible for the "high" sensation, and CBD (cannabidiol), non-psychoactive, known for its many therapeutic properties, particularly anti-inflammatory, anxiolytic and analgesic. Other phytocannabinoids include CBG (cannabigerol), a precursor of other cannabinoids with potential medicinal effects, CBC (cannabichromene), which has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, and CBN (cannabinol), a slightly psychoactive THC derivative with sedative effects.

Endocannabinoids are cannabinoids naturally produced by the human body and interact with the endocannabinoid system to maintain homeostasis, meaning internal balance. The two main endocannabinoids are anandamide (AEA), often called the "bliss molecule" because it is involved in regulating mood, memory, appetite and pain, and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), which plays a role in regulating cardiovascular and immune system functions.

Synthetic cannabinoids, created in laboratories, mimic the effects of phytocannabinoids. They are used for medical and research purposes, as well as in some recreational products. Some of these synthetic cannabinoids can be much more potent than natural phytocannabinoids, which can lead to unpredictable and potentially dangerous side effects.

Cannabinoids exert their effects by binding to cannabinoid receptors present in the human body. The two main types of receptors are CB1 receptors, mainly located in the brain and central nervous system and responsible for the psychoactive effects of THC, and CB2 receptors, mainly found in the immune system and peripheral tissues, playing a role in modulating pain and inflammation.

Research on cannabinoids and the endocannabinoid system is expanding rapidly, revealing more and more about their role in human health and their therapeutic potential. Discoveries in this field could lead to new treatment options for a variety of medical conditions.
