What happens to propylene glycol when it is heated?

When heated, propylene glycol (PG) simply undergoes a physical state change from liquid to gas, carrying flavorings and nicotine along with it. This transformation occurs at low temperatures, long before the molecule experiences thermal stress, creating a stable and fluid aerosol for your lungs.

As long as you stay within the recommended wattage ranges, PG maintains its molecular integrity perfectly. It is only in cases of extreme overheating, above 280°C, that it may begin to break down into irritating substances like formaldehyde. In short, PG is the taxi of your vape: it delivers its passengers safely and evaporates without a trace, provided you don't push it to illegal thermodynamic speeds.
