Introduction: Houston, we have a juice problem!
That's it, the big day has arrived. You've made the decision of the century, the one that will make your doctor and your banker cry tears of joy: you are switching to vaping. You have your shiny new gear in hand, ready to fire, but suddenly... drama strikes. You find yourself facing a wall of colorful bottles, weird names that look like Wi-Fi passwords, and mathematical ratios worthy of a quantum physics class. Welcome to the jungle!
Don't panic, take a deep breath (just air for now, soon to be vapor). Choosing your first fuel isn't mission impossible. At Travers-Shop, we like to say that finding the right e-liquid is like finding a soulmate: sometimes you have to kiss a few frogs before finding the right one, but when it matches, it's for life (or at least for the day). In this supercharged guide, we are going to transform you into a true sommelier of steam. Fasten your seatbelts, we're taking off!
Step 1: Flavor, or the art of not vaping just anything
Let's be clear from the start: you can have the most expensive electronic cigarette in the universe, the one that makes coffee and tells the time, but if you put a liquid inside that tastes like fermented socks, you're going to run back to your pack of smokes. Taste pleasure is the keystone of your smoking cessation.
To navigate our huge catalog of e-liquids, you need to know that there are 5 major families sharing the territory. Each has its codes, its fans, and its signature flavors.
1. The "Classic": The safe bet to feel at home
We don't say "tobacco" anymore (shh, it's forbidden), we say "Classic". It's a bit like the equivalent of "whole wheat bread" when you want to eat healthy. It is the queen family for beginners. Why? Because your brain is a creature of habit. It has spent years associating nicotine with the taste of dried leaves. Giving it a "Classic" liquid reassures it, rocks it to sleep, and prevents it from panicking due to a lack of bearings. To start, we strongly advise you to begin with a Blond or Brown Classic, depending on your old habits. It is the ideal candidate to become your "All-day" (the liquid you will vape from morning to night without ever getting sick of it).
2. Mint: The slap of freshness
If you were a fan of menthol cigarettes (peace be upon them), this category is made for you. Menthol has a superpower: it artificially increases the "hit" sensation (the feeling in the throat). It's fresh, it's clean, it wakes up the taste buds. Be careful, however, not to confuse "fresh mint" (chewing gum taste) with "icy mint" (which instantly transforms you into a snowman).
3. Fruity: The orchard in your pocket
Want to bite into an apple, a strawberry, or a mango without the seeds? Fruity flavors are here. This is often step 2 for the vaper. Once weaned off the tobacco taste, you discover that you can vape delicious things. Be careful though: at the very beginning, switching from a tarry cigarette to a tropical fruit salad can be a psychological shock that's a bit too brutal for some.
4. Gourmand: Pastry without the calories
Imagine a lemon meringue pie, a cookie fresh out of the oven, or salted butter caramel... but one that doesn't make you gain a gram. That's the magic of gourmand (dessert) flavors. They are comforting, creamy, perfect for morning coffee or in the evening in front of the TV. But beware, they can be a bit cloying if you vape them non-stop 24/7.
5. Drinks: Happy Hour (almost) without alcohol
Cola, lemonade, coffee, iced tea, or even Mojito or Piña Colada... The mad chemists of vaping have reproduced everything. It's fun, it's quirky, but it's often reserved for occasional moments of pleasure rather than for daily withdrawal.
Step 2: The War of Ratios (PG/VG), or the perfect texture
Once you've chosen your flavor camp, we need to talk chemistry. But promised, we'll keep it simple. Look at your bottle, you will often see numbers like 70/30, 50/50, or 30/70. It's not the score of a tennis match, it's the ratio between Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG). This choice is crucial because it depends directly on your equipment.
Understanding the forces at play
To use a culinary analogy (we like to eat at Travers-Shop):
PG (Propylene Glycol) is fluid like water. It carries the taste and promotes the "hit" in the throat. But it makes little vapor.
VG (Vegetable Glycerin) is viscous like honey or syrup. It is soft, sweet, and produces huge clouds of vapor worthy of a locomotive.
The Golden Rule: Adapt the liquid to the power
This is where many beginners fail (and end up with liquid all over their fingers or a vile burnt taste). Your PG/VG ratio must be chosen according to your e-cigarettes and the power (wattage) at which you vape.
Option A: The 70PG/30VG Ratio (Fluid)
If you are starting with small, discreet equipment, a thin "pod", or if you vape at low power (below 15-20 Watts) to imitate the tight draw of a cigarette: you need fluid! The lower the power, the more you look for a liquid rich in PG (70/30 or 80/20). Why? Because the coils of these machines have tiny feeding holes. If you put in liquid that is too thick (VG), the cotton won't soak up fast enough and... Bwaaaark! Burnt taste (Dry Hit).
Option B: The 30PG/70VG Ratio (Viscous)
Conversely, if you bought a war machine, a huge thing that looks like a lightsaber and sends 80 Watts to make vapor rings on the ceiling: you need fat! The higher the power, the more you need a viscous liquid rich in VG (30/70 or Full VG). If you put a liquid that is too fluid in there, it will leak everywhere through the airflows. Leaks are guaranteed.
Option C: The 50/50, the Magic Pass-Key
Not too sure? Do you have "average" equipment? The 50/50 is the Switzerland of vaping. Neither too liquid nor too thick. It is the perfect compromise that works on 90% of current equipment, offering a good balance between flavor and vapor. If you have any doubt, take 50/50, it is the life jacket that will save you from many leaking or dry-hit worries.
Step 3: Nicotine, the End-Level Boss
Last step, but not least: the nicotine level. Forget everything you heard on TV. Nicotine is not the devil, it is your ally so you don't kill your office colleagues because you are in withdrawal. The goal is to fill your receptors so you don't feel the need to light a real cigarette.
You absolutely must not under-dose your nicotine at the beginning. It's the classic mistake: "Oh, I'll take 3mg to go easy". Result? You're going to vape 10ml a day and end up cracking for a smoke. You have to dose "strong" at the beginning to soothe the beast.
The Calculation Method (approximate but effective)
We will choose the nicotine level mainly based on the number of cigarettes you smoked per day (based on a "strong" cigarette):
- Less than 5 cigarettes/day: A rate of 3 mg/ml may suffice. It's for the gesture and the little pleasure.
- Between 5 and 10 cigarettes/day: Aim for 6 mg/ml. It starts to scratch the throat a little, you feel it working.
- Between 10 and 20 cigarettes/day: We move on to serious things with 11 or 12 mg/ml. This is the core target for average smokers.
- More than 20 cigarettes/day: Don't be afraid, go for 16 or 18 mg/ml. If it is too strong in the throat and makes you cough, turn to "Nicotine Salts" (available in 10 or 20mg) which are much softer to inhale while being ultra-effective.
Conclusion: Your turn to play!
Choosing your e-liquid is a bit like composing your own cooking recipe. You need the right ingredients (Classic flavor to start), the right texture (PG/VG ratio adapted to your watts), and the right seasoning (nicotine for Olympian calm). Don't be discouraged if the first one isn't "the one". The universe of vaping is vast, rich, and above all, much more fun than that of cold tobacco.
Now that you are armed with all this theoretical knowledge, all that remains is to put it into practice. Go explore our collection, run tests, dare to try things, and above all, enjoy yourself. After all, at Travers-Shop, we believe that quitting smoking should never be a punishment, but a discovery!
